Early life and backgroundBhanu Athaiya was born Bhanu Rajopadhye on 28 April 1929 in Kolhapur, then part of Kolhapur State in British India. She grew up in an artistic household; her father, Annasaheb, worked as a painter and encouraged art in the family. Bhanu was the third child and one of six siblings. She began art studies at a young age and continued her formal education at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art (commonly known as Sir JJ School of Arts) in Mumbai, where she graduated in Fine Arts and received a fellowship and a gold medal for her work.
Career
Bhanu Athaiya started her professional life as a freelance fashion illustrator, contributing to women’s magazines such as Eve Weekly and taking on small outfit-design projects for boutiques. Her transition into film costume design began in the early 1950s, with credited work on films including Shahenshah (1953) and Chalis Baba Ek Chor (1954). By 1956 she had designed costumes for C.I.D., directed by Guru Dutt, which increased her visibility within the Hindi film industry.
Over the course of her career she designed for more than 100 films, working on classic and popular productions such as Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Pyaasa, Waqt, Karz, Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam, Ganga Jamuna, Ram Teri Ganga Maili, The Burning Train, and Guide. She collaborated with prominent Indian filmmakers including Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, and Ashutosh Gowariker, and also worked with international directors such as Conrad Rooks and Richard Attenborough.
Her work on the 1982 film Gandhi earned her international recognition. In April 1983 she received the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for that film, becoming the first Indian to win an Oscar. Nationally, her costume work was recognized with National Film Awards for Best Costume Design for Lekin (1991) and Lagaan (2002). Later honors included a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and the Laadli Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.
Athaiya continued to work through several decades; one of the last Hindi films she designed for was Swades (2004). In 2010 she published a book titled The Art of Costume Design with HarperCollins, and presented a copy to the Dalai Lama.

She returned the trophy to the Academy on 8 December 2012. Following health setbacks, including partial paralysis, she was bedridden from 2016.
Death
Bhanu Athaiya died in Mumbai on 15 October 2020 at the age of 91. Reports indicate she passed away in her sleep.
