Early life and background

Bharat Raj was born on 26 October 1990 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Raised in the city where he continues to base much of his work, he attended SBOA School & Junior College and Hindu Senior Secondary School before graduating from St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, Chennai. Sport played a major role in his youth: he represented Tamil Nadu in junior basketball and later joined the national basketball setup as a teenager. A sports accident in 2007 cut short his basketball career and led him to focus on bodybuilding and physique training as a way to recover and channel his energy.

Career

Bharat’s early competitive results came in regional and national fitness contests. At 19 he reached the top four in the 2009 Mr. Chennai competition, which opened opportunities in runway modelling. He modeled for a variety of labels and stores, and over time combined modelling with a professional career in fitness.

He began freelancing as a fitness trainer in 2013–2014 and then opened his own gym, The Body Studio, in Besant Nagar, Chennai in 2014. The gym became the base for his work as a celebrity trainer. Among the actors and industry professionals he has trained are Vikram, R. Sarathkumar, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Bindu Madhavi, Nivetha Pethuraj, Vishal and director S. Shankar. He notably trained Vikram on a targeted routine for the 2015 film I.

On the competitive physique circuit, Bharat accumulated numerous titles and placements. He won Musclemania India Model Universe (2015) and placed in Fitness Universe categories that year. In 2016 he was Overall Novice Physique Champion at the NPC USA Garden State Championship (tall category) and won the IBBF Mr. South India Men’s Physique title. He also claimed the Fitfactor Physique Model Champion title in 2016 and competed at Arnold Classic Asia the same year. His international résumé continued to grow: he was a gold medallist at the PCA World Championship in Birmingham in 2018 and earned the IFBB Pro Card in 2019 after outperforming a large international field. That Pro Card qualified him to compete in IFBB professional shows worldwide.

Parallel to his fitness achievements, Bharat developed a screen career with roles in Tamil and Telugu productions. He appeared in the Tamil film Poojai (2014) and played parts in Mersal (a role as Sesha), Adanga Maru (as Abhijit) and Ponniyin Selvan (as Karka). He has acted in Telugu short films including Sattvam (lead role as Ratan) and Prakshalana, and took a role in the TV mini-series Ekkadiki Ee Parugu (2019). In 2022 he appeared in the Tamil science-fiction film Captain on ZEE5 as Sheikh.

Entrepreneurial ventures and other projects

Beyond coaching and competing, Bharat launched a restaurant called Love At First Bite in 2018 that focused on nutritious cuisine; the venue is located above his gym. Earlier in his career he received sponsorship support from Evolution Sports Nutrition (ESN).
