Early life and background

Bharati Achrekar was born on 15 October 1957 in Maharashtra. She grew up in a family with strong artistic roots: her mother was the late Manik Varma, a noted Indian classical singer, and her father was the late Amar Varma, a Hindi-Urdu writer and poet. Achrekar attended Hujurpaga School in Pune and went on to graduate from SNDT College in Mumbai with a specialization in Hindustani classical music.

Career

Achrekar began her performing career on stage at age 17, initially working in musical theatre. Her stage debut included a role in the musical play where she portrayed Tansen’s daughter. She has been active across Marathi theatre as well as in Hindi and English language projects.

On television, Achrekar became widely recognized for playing Mrs. Wagle in the 1988 Doordarshan series Wagle ki Duniya. Her TV work spans numerous serials from the late 1980s through the 2010s and beyond, including Aa Bail Muje Maar (1987), Kachchi Dhoop (1987), Sumit Sambhal Lega (2015), and Wagle Ki Duniya– Nayi Peedhi Naye Kissey (2021).

Her film debut in Hindi came with Apne Paraye (1980) in which she played Naintara. She went on to appear in several Hindi films across the 1980s and later decades, including Sanjog (1985), Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986), Eshwar (1989), and a role in Coolie No. 1 (2020). Achrekar has also performed in English-language features such as Little John (2001) and Flavors (2003).

In regional cinema she has appeared in Marathi films including Saatchya Aat Gharat (2004), Divasen Divas (2006), Valu (2008), and FU: Friendship Unlimited (2017). In 2013 she contributed vocal work to the Hindi film The Lunchbox, voicing the character Mrs. Deshpande.

Before focusing full-time on acting, Achrekar worked in television production. She has described joining TV as a producer in 1972, producing cultural programming and obituary features for prominent artistes. Although she found that work rewarding, she eventually left the government role when acting opportunities increased.
