Schooling took place in Amritsar, and Bharti went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts and later completed postgraduate studies in history. She attended Punjab Technical University on a scholarship earned in part through sporting success. As a youth she competed in pistol shooting and archery at state and national levels and had hoped to pursue a career in shooting, but the family could not afford advanced training.
