Bhasha Sumbli is an Indian theatre artist, actor and director known for her stage work and for portraying Sharda Pandit in the 2022 film The Kashmir Files.

Early life and background

Bhasha Sumbli was born into a Kashmiri Pandit family and raised in Sumbal, Jammu and Kashmir. Her family later lived in a migrant camp in Delhi after leaving the Valley, experiences she has said left a lasting impression on her. Her father is the poet and writer Agni Shekhar and her mother is writer and political activist Kshama Kaul.

Sumbli pursued formal training in acting at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, where she studied traditional performance forms including Koodiyattam and dance. She began writing plays in her teens; her first produced play dates from when she was about 15, and some of her early work appeared in national journals and in the NSD magazine.

Career

Bhasha Sumbli built her career primarily in theatre as an actor, director and practitioner of classical and folk forms. She has performed in a number of Hindi plays, including productions directed by the Kashmiri folk theatre artist Moti Lal Khemu. Her work in theatre was recognised in 2014 when she received the Inlaks Theatre Award for acting.

Alongside stage work, Sumbli has worked in television and film. Her on-screen debut came with a cameo in the 2020 film Chhapaak. She later appeared in television serials, including early episodes of the Doordarshan serial Ek Tha Rusty and the Sony Entertainment show Mere Dad Ki Dulhan in 2019. In 2015 and 2017 she served as an acting mentor on the reality shows India’s Best Dramebaaz 2 and Sabse Bada Kalakar, and in 2021 she mentored the IPL talk show Super Funday on the Star network. She has also organised acting seminars and workshops to train emerging actors.

Sumbli gained wider public attention for her portrayal of Sharda Pandit in the 2022 Hindi film The Kashmir Files. Describing the intensity of shooting for that film, she has spoken about how some scenes triggered strong emotional and physical reactions tied to the history her family and community experienced.
