Bhawna Jat Biography
Bhawna Jat is an Indian 20km race-walker from Kabra village in Rajsamand district, Rajasthan. Rising from a rural background, she qualified for the Tokyo 0
Early life and backgroundBhawna Jat was born on 3 January 1996 in Kabra village, Rajsamand district, Rajasthan. The daughter of Shankarlal Jat, a farmer, and Nosar Devi, a homemaker, she grew up helping with daily chores and grazing cattle before being introduced to athletics. Her family also includes a brother named Prakash Jat.
Her introduction to race walking came in 2010 when a physical education trainer from her area invited village children to a district-level athletics competition. Bhawna joined what remained an open slot in a 3 kilometre race walk and discovered a talent that would shape her future. Early training often took place in the early morning to avoid social scrutiny, and financial hardship meant she initially competed barefoot or in slippers until her brother bought her a pair of shoes.
Career
Bhawna began competing at the senior level in 2016 at the National Inter-state Championships in Hyderabad. Over the next few years she moved up the national ranks, winning a west-zone junior gold in 2014 and a silver the following year. In 2016 she took employment with Indian Railways as a ticket collector in Howrah, West Bengal, a role she balanced alongside her training.
Health setbacks and limited leave from work affected her early progress. A bout of typhoid prevented her from competing in 2017, though she returned to take bronze in 2018. That result allowed her a year of paid leave to train, and she used the opportunity to focus more intensely on the sport.
Her national breakthrough came in 2019 and 2020. She won both the inter-railway title and the National Open Championship in 2019. At the National Race Walking Championships in Ranchi in 2020 she finished the 20 km event in 1 hour 29 minutes and 54 seconds. That performance met the Olympic qualifying standard and made her the first Indian woman to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in the 20 km race walk category.
Coaches and training
Bhawna has trained under coaches including Gurmukh Sihag and Harpreet Singh. After qualifying for the Olympics she joined the SAI training centre in Jaipur to continue preparation under Gurmukh Sihag’s supervision. Earlier in her development she trained in Rohtak and Jaipur despite financial and familial pressures, a decision supported by her brother who left his job to help her pursue training.
Public profile
Bhawna’s progress attracted attention because of the obstacles she overcame — growing up in a poor household, beginning competition without proper shoes, and managing work responsibilities while training. She was known for her technical discipline on the track; coaches praised her clean walking action and consistency, even through periods of illness and injury.
By June 2021 she had not yet competed at an international event at either junior or senior level, but her national results and Olympic qualification brought her into the national spotlight. She has been credited as the second Indian woman to achieve an Olympic qualifying standard in the 20 km race walk after Khushbir Kaur in 2016, and she held the national fastest time in the event until it was surpassed in February 2021.
Latest updates
As of mid-2021 Bhawna was training at the SAI centre in Jaipur under Gurmukh Sihag and preparing to represent India at the Tokyo Olympics in the 20 km race walk. Her listed height is approximately 162 cm (5 ft 3 in), and she is an undergraduate by education.
Her journey from village competitions to the Olympic qualification underscored a pattern of steady improvement and determination, with family support and coaching playing key roles in her rise.
