Early life and background

Bhumika Chawla was born Rachna Chawla on 21 August 1978 in New Delhi, India. Brought up in Delhi in a Punjabi family, she is the daughter of Col. Ajitsingh Chawla and Bali Chawla. She has an elder brother who serves in the Indian Army and an elder sister. As a student she took part in dance competitions and stage plays, and in 1994 she finished as first runner-up in the May Queen Ball beauty contest.

Career

Chawla began her screen career on television, appearing in the Hindi teen drama Hip Hip Hurray in 1998 as Meera and in the 1999 Star Plus anthology Star Best Sellers – Fursat Mein. Her film debut came in Telugu cinema with Yuvakudu (2000), and she soon expanded into other regional industries. Early Tamil work included Badri (2001) and Roja Kootam (2002); one of her most widely recognised Hindi roles was Nirjara Bharadwaj in Tere Naam (2003).

Across the 2000s and 2010s Chawla worked regularly in multiple languages. Notable Telugu films listed in her filmography include Kushi (2001), Missamma (2003), Naa Autograph (2004), Collector Gari Bharya (2010), Seetimaarr (2021) and Sita Ramam (2022). Her Tamil films include Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (2006), Kalavaadiya Pozhuthugal (2017), Kolaiyuthir Kaalam (2019) and Kannai Nambathey (2023). She has taken roles in other formats as well, starring in the Hindi web series Bhram (2019) as Ankita Paul on Zee5 and featuring in the Hindi music video Maahiya (2011) by Adnan Sami.

Beyond acting, Chawla has worked as a producer on the Telugu film Thakita Thakita (2010). She is also a poet: she has written more than 60 poems inspired by episodes from her life. Commercial work has included advertisements for brands such as Pond’s, Joyalukkas, Mangaldeep and Nihar Shanti Amla Badam Hair Oil.
