Early life and background

Bhupesh Kumar Baghel was born on 23 August 1961 in Durg, then part of Madhya Pradesh and now in Chhattisgarh. He completed his schooling at Higher Secondary School Marar Patan, Durg, and went on to study at Science College affiliated with Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur. He holds a BSc (1983) and a postgraduate degree in science (1986) from Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University. Baghel is often referred to by the nickname Kaka. He is married to Mukteshwari Baghel and lists Durg, Chhattisgarh, as his hometown.

Career

Baghel’s political career began in the mid-1980s when he joined the Indian Youth Congress in 1985. He rose through youth and district-level posts, including serving as president of the District Youth Congress in Durg from 1990 to 1994 and as vice-president of the Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress in 1994–1995. He became a member of the All India Congress Committee and served in organizational roles such as general secretary and program coordinator in the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee.

Electoral and legislative service has been a constant thread in his career. He was first elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Patan constituency in 1993 and was re-elected in 1998. After the creation of Chhattisgarh state, Baghel was elected to the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly from Patan in 2003 and served as deputy leader of the opposition from 2003 to 2008. He lost several elections in the mid-2000s, including parliamentary contests from Durg (2004) and Raipur (2009), and an assembly election in Patan (2008), but returned to win Patan again in 2013 and 2018.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s he served as minister in portfolios that included public grievances, transport, revenue, public health engineering and relief. He also chaired the Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation in early 2000 and was a member of committees related to aviation.

Baghel served as president of the Indian National Congress in Chhattisgarh from December 2014 until December 2019. Following the 2018 state elections, he was appointed the third Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, a position he held in the 2018–2023 term.
