Early life and background

Bhupinder Singh Hooda was born on 15 September 1947 in the village of Sanghi in Rohtak district, then part of East Punjab (now in Haryana). The son of Ranbir Singh Hooda, a freedom fighter, and Har Devi Hooda, he grew up in the Rohtak area and later attended Sainik School, Kunjpura. Hooda completed his undergraduate studies at Punjab University, Chandigarh, and went on to earn an L.L.B. from Delhi University.

He is identified with the Jaat community and follows Hinduism. His personal interests include reading, travel and playing tennis. Hooda is a vegetarian and does not smoke or drink.

Career

Hooda’s public life began at the grassroots level. In the early 1970s he was active in the Kiloi block congress committee, and during the 1980s he held leadership positions in youth and local panchayat bodies in Haryana, including senior vice-president of the Haryana Youth Congress, president of the Rohtak Panchayat Samiti and president of the Haryana Panchayat Parishad.

He moved into national politics with multiple terms in the Lok Sabha, winning elections in 1991, 1996, 1998 and 2004. In the mid-1990s he served as president of the Haryana Congress Committee, a role he held from 1996 until 2001.

Hooda first became Chief Minister of Haryana on 5 March 2005. He returned to the office for a second term beginning 25 October 2009. After contesting state assembly elections, he was elected to the Haryana Vidhan Sabha from the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi constituency in 2014 by a margin of 47,185 votes. In the 2019 Haryana assembly elections he retained the Gari Sampla-Kiloi seat, defeating the BJP candidate Satish Nandal by a margin of 58,213 votes.

On 4 September 2019 Hooda took on the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Legislative Assembly.
