Early life and background

Bi Nguyen was born in Vietnam on October 30, 1989. She moved to the United States with her family in March 1995 and spent part of her childhood in Oakland, California. As a youth she worked early jobs — including delivering newspapers — and by her mid-teens had left home and relocated to Houston, Texas. While still young she learned to drive and had saved enough to buy an apartment by age 17.

Bi is the youngest of ten siblings. Her father served as a Vietnamese Army general, and her mother was a homemaker. She attended Eisenhower High School in Texas and later adopted American nationality.

Career

Nguyen’s formal introduction to combat sports began when she took Muay Thai self-defense classes at 21. She transitioned to amateur mixed martial arts competition in 2014, debuting in the Texas-based promotion Legacy FC where she won her first amateur bout. To support her training, she at times lived and worked in gyms, performing cleaning and front desk duties in exchange for accommodation and access to training facilities.

Her amateur success included winning the King of the Cage Atomweight title on November 13, 2015, with a victory over Tonya Leis. Nguyen turned professional in 2016 and won her first pro fight against Andy Nguyen. In 2018 she signed with ONE Championship, where she scored wins over opponents such as Dwi Ani Retno Wulan and Ritu Phogat. She also faced a series of tougher results against fighters including Bozhena Antoniyar, Nong Stamp, Jihin Radzuan, Jennifer Olsim, and Heqin Lin.

Nguyen left ONE Championship in August 2022. That November she fought for the strawweight title at Matrix Fight Night 10, where she challenged Puja Tomar and came up short. As of 2022 her professional record stood at six wins and nine losses.

Nguyen trains at Xtreme Couture Gym in Las Vegas and Heritage Muay Thai Gym in Texas. In addition to competing, she works as a coach, providing boxing instruction at Lou Savarese’s gym to students ranging in age from 14 to 76.
