Early life and background

Bibhu Mohapatra was born on 7 June 1972 in Rourkela, Odisha. Raised in India, he developed an early interest in sewing and making clothes while practicing with his mother. Mohapatra moved to the United States in the mid-1990s to pursue higher education and a career in fashion; he later completed postgraduate studies in economics and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology after relocating to New York in 1999.

Career

Mohapatra began his professional career in New York as an assistant designer, first at Halston and later at J. Mendel. He launched his eponymous label in 2008 and built a ready-to-wear collection that reached luxury retailers including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks, Nordstrom and Lane Crawford.

He has worked across runway, costume and jewellery design. In 2012 he served as the primary costume designer for a production of Verdi's Aida at Glimmerglass Opera, a project that coincided with presentation of his collection during New York Fashion Week. In 2016 he expanded into fine jewellery with a collaboration called Artemis by Bibhu Mohapatra, a diamond line inspired by cultural and cosmic themes.

Mohapatra's work has been recognized by industry organizations. He received the Young Innovator Award from the National Arts Club in 2010 and was elected to the Council of Fashion Designers of America that same year. His work has been the subject of exhibition—SCAD Atlanta presented an exhibition titled Surface in 2013—and he was a finalist for the International Woolmark Prize in 2013. In 2014 he received a Global Talent Award in a Hall of Fame ceremony.

Business developments and later activity

In 2017 Mohapatra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for his brand; he has described the filing as a strategic decision to restructure operations, reduce debt and reposition the business. That year he was also invited to Buckingham Palace as part of the official start of the UK-India Year of Culture.

Mohapatra participates in education and cultural initiatives. He co-founded the India Society, a New York-based organization that provides tuition support and internships for students of fashion and fine art. He has also designed handwoven silk sarees as a way to support traditional weavers in Odisha.

His designs have been worn by Michelle Obama, Lupita Nyong’o, Priyanka Chopra, Jennifer Lopez and Freida Pinto.
