Early life and backgroundBickram Ghosh was born on 20 October 1966 in Kolkata, West Bengal, where he also grew up. He comes from a musical family: his father, Shankar Ghosh, was a noted tabla maestro and his mother, Sanjukta Ghosh, is a classical vocalist. Ghosh received his schooling at La Martiniere, Kolkata, and went on to study English at St. Xavier’s College for his bachelor’s degree and at Jadavpur University for a master’s degree in English literature.
Career
Ghosh established himself as a leading tabla player and an adventurous musical collaborator. He is especially recognized for his virtuosity and dexterity on the tabla and for pioneering experimental fusion projects. Early in his performing career he served as an accompanist to Pandit Ravi Shankar for more than a decade and contributed to the album Full Circle, a project associated with a Grammy-winning legacy.
Across several decades Ghosh has released and performed with multiple projects. His discography and albums include Full Circle at Carnegie Hall (2001), Rhythm Scape (2003), Crossroads (2010), Jal (2013), The Music Benders (2015) and Paperboats (2019). He has also collaborated on recordings with international and Indian artists, appearing on projects such as Chants of India (1997), Nomad Christmas (1997), Cello with Barry Phillips (2000), Jewels of the Subcontinent (2000), The Afro-Indian Project (2001), and other cross-cultural works through the early 2000s and beyond.
As a composer for film, Ghosh made his debut with the score for Iti Srikanta (2004) and has composed music for more than three dozen feature films. He co-composed the soundtrack for the film Jal (2013) with Sonu Nigam; that score received an Oscar nomination for best original score. In addition to composing, Ghosh has appeared in film-related performances and acted in Band of Maharajas (2017).
Ghosh’s band RhythmScape brought his fusion approach to international stages: the group made its UK debut at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London in 2003, performed at major festivals and venues across Europe, and played high-profile concerts including a sold-out appearance at the Rhythm Sticks festival in London. In 2010 Ghosh launched Melting Pot Productions to support his creative work. He founded the Bickram Ghosh Academy of Performing Arts in 2014 to teach Indian music and dance; the academy began with three centres in Kolkata and plans for further expansion were part of its vision. Ghosh has continued to perform and record, including a recent collaboration with singer Hariharan on a 2021 release titled Ishq, and live concerts together.
