Early life and background

Bilal Ashraf was born on 10 October 1979 in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. He grew up in Sindh and completed his schooling at St. Michael’s Convent School in Karachi. For higher education he attended Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania, where he took a visual effects course and completed a double major in finance and art with a minor in psychology. He later pursued an animation course at Escape Studios in London and also attended an acting school in the United Kingdom as well as theatre classes at NAPA in Karachi to hone his craft.

Career

Ashraf began his professional life outside of entertainment, working as a hedge fund consultant in New York before deciding to change direction and pursue animation and visual effects. After leaving the finance world he entered modelling, appearing in print advertisements and photoshoots, and gradually transitioned into film.

He made his feature film debut in Janaan (2016) playing the character Asfandyar. Before that he had a small cameo in O21 (2014). He went on to appear in a string of Urdu films including Yalghaar (2017), Rangreza (2017) and Superstar (2019). On television he has acted in the telefilm Aik Hai Nigar (2021) as Johar Ali Khan and later performed the role of Dr. Davud Basharat in the Hum TV drama Yunhi (2023).

Beyond acting, Ashraf has worked behind the camera in visual effects and is the founder of the production company Radical Studios. Through that company he produced the television series Khaab Toot Jaatay Hain, which aired on Hum TV in 2021. He has also appeared in a number of TV commercials for brands including Jazz X, Falah and Tap and Pay.
