Early life and backgroundBilal Maqsood was born on 23 March 1971 in Karachi, Pakistan, and raised in a joint family. His parents were prominent figures in Pakistan’s literary and artistic circles: his father, Anwar Maqsood, worked as a painter, scriptwriter, poet, humorist and actor, and his mother, Imrana Maqsood, is a writer. Bilal grew up surrounded by creative influence, which encouraged his interest in painting and music from an early age.
He attended Bai Virbaijee Soparivala Parsi High School in Karachi and later enrolled at Government Commerce College, where he met fellow student and future musical partner Faisal Kapadia. Bilal left a commerce degree course to pursue a more creative path and went on to study Communication Design at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, earning a degree there. While still a student at Indus Valley, he exhibited his paintings at the Pakistan American Cultural Center in Karachi.
Career
Bilal’s involvement with music began in childhood; he learned to play keyboard and harmonium by the age of eight. In 1988 he and three friends formed the Karachi‑based pop‑rock band Strings. In the band Bilal served as lead vocalist, guitarist and primary composer, while his father contributed lyrics. The group initially operated through the late 1980s and early 1990s, disbanded in 1992, and later reunited in 2000 to continue a successful run.
Strings expanded its audience beyond Pakistan, including work for the Indian film industry. In 2006 the band recorded the song “Yeh Hai Meri Kahani” for the Hindi film Zinda. Bilal and Strings also took on roles behind the camera: from seasons 7 through 10 of Coke Studio Pakistan (beginning in 2014) Bilal and Faisal Kapadia acted as directors and co‑producers, shaping that flagship music series. In 2005 the pair were named National Goodwill Ambassadors for UNICEF Pakistan.
After years with Strings, the band announced its end in 2021. Bilal then launched a solo career in 2022. His solo releases that year included the Hindi single “Naya Naya,” co‑written with his father, along with other Hindi songs such as “Zalima,” “Thak Sa Gaya Hoon,” and “Dheem Taana.” He also collaborated with Peek Freans Gluco on an album titled Urdu Nursery Rhymes, an eight‑song collection intended to present children’s rhymes in Urdu and inspired by the educational aim of programs like Sesame Street.
Beyond recorded music, Bilal has worked as a director and executive producer on other Pakistani music shows. In 2020 he and musician Yasir Jaswal served as director and executive producer for a season of Velo Sound Station. He has performed live in Pakistan and abroad, including shows in India and the United States.

Bilal has maintained a visible public profile that extends beyond performance. He is active on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, where he shares professional updates as well as personal interests.
