Early life and background

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was born on 21 September 1988 at Lady Dufferin Hospital in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. He is the son of Asif Ali Zardari, a former president of Pakistan, and the late Benazir Bhutto, who served as Pakistan’s first female prime minister. Bilawal is the grandson of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Nusrat Bhutto. His family background combines Sindhi ancestry on his mother’s side and Baloch ancestry on his father’s side.

Bilawal spent much of his childhood outside Pakistan, travelling with his mother during periods of exile. He attended schools including Karachi Grammar School, Froebel's International School in Islamabad, and Rashid School for Boys in Dubai. He completed higher education at Oxford University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Modern History and Politics and later being promoted to a Master of Arts by seniority.

Career

Bilawal entered formal politics as a young man after the assassination of his mother in December 2007. Three days after her death, at age 19 and while still an undergraduate at Oxford, he was appointed chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). That early appointment marked the start of his public political role and association with the party his family has long led.

Under his leadership, the PPP became the first major Pakistani party to publish its 2018 election manifesto, pledging measures to address hunger, economic recovery and institutional harmony. In the July 2018 general elections the PPP emerged as the largest party in Sindh and the third-largest nationally. Bilawal won a National Assembly seat from Larkana (NA-200) in 2018 with 84,426 votes and was elected a member of the National Assembly on 13 August 2018.

In March 2019 he was elected unopposed as chairperson of the National Assembly Standing Committee for Human Rights. On 27 April 2022 he was sworn in as Pakistan’s foreign minister, becoming the country’s youngest person to serve in that role.

Bilawal has cultivated a public image tied to his family’s political legacy while also focusing on contemporary issues. He has been vocal on women’s rights and has called for measures such as banning child marriage; in public statements he highlighted comparisons with other Muslim-majority countries when discussing minimum marriage ages.
