Early life and background

Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam was born on 27 January 1999 in Imphal, Manipur. Raised in a Manipuri family in Langol Ningthou Leikai, Imphal West, she grew up with two siblings. Her father, Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh, works as a farmer and runs a grocery shop, and her mother, S. Ibemcha Devi, has worked as a priest and has also done house-help work in their neighbourhood.

Devi began her sporting life in Taekwondo, training and competing in that discipline from 2008 until 2012. Because of her compact stature, she transitioned to weightlifting in 2013 and subsequently pursued formal training at the SAI North Eastern Regional Centre in Imphal. After three years of development there, she was selected for further training at the National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Imphal.

Career

Competing primarily in the 53kg and 55kg weight classes, Bindyarani Devi has compiled a record of national and international performances across junior and senior events. She made a mark at the 2016 IWLF Youth Nationals in Bhubaneswar, where she competed in the 53kg category and won gold with a combined total of 151 kg.

Devi’s progress continued at national events, and she moved into international competition. In 2019 she won gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Apia with a total of 183 kg. The same year she claimed gold at the Khelo India Youth Games U-21 in Pune in the 55kg category and stood on the podium at the IWLF Senior Nationals in Visakhapatnam.

Her domestic results include a gold at the 2021 IWLF Youth, Junior & Senior National Weightlifting Championships in Patiala in the 55kg category with a total lift of 185 kg, and a bronze at the 2018 Senior Nationals in Moodbidri in the 53kg category. At the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent she recorded a 114 kg clean and jerk in the 55kg women’s division.

At multi-sport and regional championship level she has also amassed podium finishes: silver at the 2016 Commonwealth Junior Championships, silver at the 2019 IWLF Senior National Championships with a 172 kg total, and silver at the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. In 2022 she won gold at the Khelo India Women League Competition in Nagrota Bagwan.

Notably, Bindyarani won the silver medal in the women’s 55kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. She posted a combined total of 202 kg, made up of an 86 kg snatch and a 116 kg clean and jerk.

Devi is often compared to other prominent weightlifters from Manipur because of shared origins and the state’s strong tradition in the sport. She has said that Kunjarani Devi was an inspiration for her; she has also noted that, although she and fellow Manipuri lifter Mirabai Chanu come from nearby towns, they do not have a personal relationship. An instance of support within the Indian weightlifting community occurred in 2019 when Mirabai Chanu gifted Bindyarani a pair of training shoes after Bindyarani arrived at a national camp without proper footwear.

Devi is coached by Vijay Sharma and competes as an Indian national athlete. Her listed physical measurements include a height of 144 cm (4 feet 9 inches) and a competition weight around 55 kg. Her eye and hair colour are both described as black.
