Early life and backgroundBismah Maroof was born on 18 July 1991 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Raised in a family that loved cricket, she was encouraged by her parents to pursue the game even though she initially had other ambitions; while in the eighth standard she had wanted to become a doctor. She attended school through the seventh standard and lists dancing and swimming among her hobbies.
Career
Bismah joined the Pakistan women’s national cricket setup as a teenager, making her One Day International debut on 13 December 2006 against India at Jaipur and her Twenty20 international debut on 29 May 2009 against Ireland in Dublin. A left-handed batter who bowls legbreak, she wears the number 3 jersey for Pakistan and has played domestically for Lahore Women and the PCB Challengers.
Handpicked for the national side as a young player, Bismah developed into a leading figure in Pakistan women’s cricket. She was part of the squad that won gold at the 2010 Asian Games in China, a notable early achievement in her international career. In March 2018 she captained Pakistan during a 3-0 series sweep of Sri Lanka, only the second time the national side had recorded such a clean-sweep in a series.
In the aftermath of the 2016 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Bismah was appointed captain of the Pakistan women’s team, assuming leadership from Sana Mir. She was again named captain for Pakistan’s campaign at the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
Throughout her career she has spoken about the need for stronger grassroots structures for girls’ cricket in Pakistan, calling for dedicated academies and improved access to training facilities so more girls can develop their skills.

In July 2018 she underwent surgery to address a severe sinus issue that had affected vision in her right eye; doctors warned the procedure carried risks that might have ended her playing career, but the operation was successful and she returned to play.
She has spoken openly about drawing inspiration from other international players and has expressed admiration for Virat Kohli’s approach to responsibility and innings-building. Bismah maintains public friendships within Pakistan’s entertainment and cultural circles and has been photographed with figures such as singer Momina Mustehsan.
