Early life and background

Robert Lane Saget was born on May 17, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His family moved during his childhood, and he spent part of his youth in Norfolk, Virginia, where he had his bar mitzvah at age 13. Saget grew up in a Jewish household; his grandparents on both sides emigrated from what was then the Russian Empire, and he later spoke fondly of the cultural traditions he remembered from his upbringing.

He attended Abington Senior High School and studied at the School of Theater, Film, and Media Arts at Temple University in Philadelphia. While at Temple he made a student film, Through Adam’s Eyes (1977), which earned an award of merit at the Student Academy Awards. Saget also enrolled briefly in a course at the University of Southern California but did not complete that program.

Career

Saget launched his entertainment career as a stand-up comedian and made early television appearances in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His on-screen acting debut in film was Spaced Out (1979), and he appeared on television in shows such as Bosom Buddies (1981). He rose to national prominence in 1987 when he was cast as Danny Tanner, the widowed father on ABC’s family sitcom Full House. The role became widely associated with Saget and earned him the affectionate nickname "America’s Dad." He later reprised the role in the Netflix sequel Fuller House from 2016 to 2020.

Beyond Full House, Saget built a diverse career across television, film, stand-up and hosting. He hosted America’s Funniest Home Videos from 1989 to 1997 and returned briefly for the program’s 20th anniversary special in 2009. He hosted other television projects, including NBC’s game show 1 vs. 100 (2006–2008), Strange Days (2010), and series such as Videos After Dark and Nashville Squares in 2019.
