Early life and background

Bobby Kinnar was born in 1984 in Sultanpur, New Delhi, and grew up in a low-income household. Her father, Om Prakash, ran a small dhaba and died while she was still a child. Her mother supported the family through odd jobs. Bobby left formal schooling after completing class 9.

As a teenager she began living within the local transgender community. At about 15 she was adopted by a transgender guruji and moved to reside with the community in Sultan Majra. Over time she learned to read and write while working with an NGO and became involved in social causes, including efforts to help underprivileged children and supporting marriages for women from her community.

Career

Bobby entered public life as a social worker before becoming active in politics. She took part in the 2011 anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare and soon after joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2011. She worked for the party at the grassroots level and sought an official municipal ticket for the 2017 Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections; when she did not receive the AAP nomination she contested that year as an independent candidate and was unsuccessful.

In 2022 the Aam Aadmi Party nominated Bobby for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi election from Sultanpuri A Ward-43. She won the seat, defeating the Indian National Congress candidate by a margin of 6,714 votes. Her victory made her the first member of the transgender community to represent a ward in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Bobby has said her political motivation is public welfare and empowerment of the transgender community. During her campaign she pledged to work against corruption at the local level, to push for public works without bribes, and to expand educational opportunities for disadvantaged children. After her election she expressed gratitude to her supporters and dedicated her win to those who worked on her campaign, noting her intent to focus on development in her ward.
