Early life and background

Boman Irani was born on 2 December 1959 in the Nagpada area of Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised primarily by his mother after his father died before his birth, he grew up in Mumbai and attended St. Mary’s School before moving on to Mithibai College. He holds a diploma in polytechnic. Irani grew up with dyslexia, a reading difficulty he faced in his early years.

Before he entered films, Irani worked in the hospitality and photography worlds. He spent time as a waiter and room service staff at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai. Photography became a central interest: after training in Chennai, he freelanced and shot for the Times of India and landed opportunities such as shooting for Miss India. He later turned to theatre on the encouragement of choreographer Shiamak Davar and received acting training from Hansraj Siddhia.

Career

Irani made his screen debut in the 2001 film Everybody Says I’m Fine!, appearing as Resomon Mittal. A short film performance in Let’s Talk (2002) brought him to the attention of filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, which led to the role of Dr. Asthana in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003). That part and later performances, including the role of Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Virus) in 3 Idiots, established him as a sought-after character actor in Hindi cinema.

Over the years Irani has balanced film work with projects on streaming platforms; he appeared in the Disney+ Hotstar series Masoom (2022) as Balraj Kapoor.
