Early life and background

Brajesh Pathak was born on 25 June 1964 in Mallawan, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a family from that town and completed his education at the University of Lucknow, where he studied commerce and law and later earned a master’s degree. His upbringing and education in Lucknow laid the groundwork for a career that combined legal practice with active public life.

Career

Pathak’s involvement in politics began while he was a student. He held prominent positions in the university student body, winning election as vice-president of the Lucknow University Students Union in 1989 and then as university president in 1990. He also represented a student organization formed during the period of student mobilization in the early 1990s.

He entered parliamentary politics in the 2000s. In 2004 Pathak won election to the 14th Lok Sabha. He later served in the Rajya Sabha, where from 2006 onward he held committee assignments including the Committee of Privileges, the Standing Committee on Coal and Steel, and the Committee on Public Accounts. During this period he was associated with the Bahujan Samaj Party and served as the party’s deputy leader in the Upper House.

Pathak contested the Unnao Lok Sabha seat again in 2014. That same year his Rajya Sabha term ended. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in August 2016 as the party prepared for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

In 2017 he contested the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election from Lucknow Central as a BJP candidate and defeated his Samajwadi Party rival by a substantial margin. He subsequently served in the state cabinet as a minister with responsibilities for law and justice. On 25 March 2022 he was sworn in as one of the deputy chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh and was also assigned cabinet responsibilities that have included legislative and justice portfolios and rural engineering services.
