Early life and background

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was born on 8 January 1957 in Bishnoharpur, a village in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in the same area and completed schooling up to the eighth standard at Shree Gandhi Vidyalaya Inter College in Nawabganj, Gonda. He later attended K. S. Saket P. G. College in Ayodhya, where he earned a Master of Arts degree, and studied law at Awadh University in Faizabad, obtaining an LLB.

A practicing Hindu who describes himself as a follower of Lord Rama, Singh developed an early interest in wrestling, competing in local akhadas and dangals as a youth. He is known to enjoy singing, writing and horse riding.

Career

Singh’s public life has been dominated by politics. He entered the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1988 and first won a Lok Sabha seat from Gonda in 1991. He returned to Parliament in 1999 from Gonda and in 2004 won the Balrampur seat. After a period with the Samajwadi Party between 2008 and 2014, during which he was elected in 2009 from Kaiserganj, he rejoined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014. He won the 2019 election to the 17th Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket. Ahead of the 2024 election cycle, he was not the party’s candidate; his son Karan Bhushan was given the ticket and won from the Kaiserganj constituency.

Outside electoral politics, Singh served as president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).
