Early life and background

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was born on 1 March 1944 in Calcutta, then part of the Bengal Presidency under British India. He completed his schooling at Sailendra Sircar Vidyalaya in Kolkata and went on to earn a B.A. Honours degree in Bengali from Presidency College in 1964. He came from a family with literary and scholarly connections; his grandfather was known for a religious work popular among Bengali priests and his uncle Sukanta Bhattacharya was a Bengali poet.

After finishing his education, Bhattacharjee worked briefly as a school teacher at Dum Dum Adarsh Vidya Mandir before turning to full-time political activity. He joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1966 and became involved in youth organisation work, serving as state secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation from 1968 until 1981. He rose through party ranks over the following decades, becoming a state committee member in 1972 and joining the state secretariat in 1982.

Career

Bhattacharjee’s electoral career began in the late 1970s. He was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly for the Kashipur-Belgachhia constituency in 1977 and later represented Cossipur and, from 1987, Jadavpur. Early ministerial responsibilities included Information and Public Relations, and later the Information and Cultural Affairs portfolio along with Urban Development and Municipal Affairs.

He served in senior state government roles for many years. Due to health issues of the then chief minister Jyoti Basu, Bhattacharjee took charge of the home and police departments in 1996. He was appointed Deputy Chief Minister in 1999 and on 6 November 2000 became Chief Minister of West Bengal. He remained in that office until his resignation on 13 May 2011. During his tenure he also held the Land and Land Revenue ministry and served as a Politburo member of the CPI(M) from 2002 until 2015.

As chief minister he pursued an industrialisation agenda intended to attract investment and generate employment. Notable projects associated with that policy included the proposed Tata Nano plant at Singur, a planned steel plant at Salboni and a chemical hub at Nayachar. These projects provoked significant opposition and controversy, and the Tata project at Singur was ultimately abandoned amid protests.

Bhattacharjee led the Left Front to electoral victories in 2001 and 2006. The first returned the coalition to power with a large majority and the second increased its seat tally. His administration also faced intense criticism over its handling of law-and-order incidents, most prominently the violence in Nandigram in 2007; he later ordered cancellation of the land acquisition notification for that area and expressed regret over police shootings while defending the broader security response.

Following an electoral defeat in 2011—when he lost the Jadavpur assembly seat—he stepped down as chief minister. In subsequent years he was relieved of central party responsibilities at the CPI(M) congress in 2015 but remained involved in state-level structures until health concerns led him to step back in 2018. He continued to appear at political events on occasion, though he experienced breathing difficulties at a rally in 2019.

Writings and cultural pursuits

Bhattacharjee was also known for his literary interests. He wrote and translated works in Bengali, including translations of Gabriel García Márquez and books such as Chena Phooler Gondho. In 2020 he published a book titled "Nazi Germany r Jonmo O Mrityu" (The Rise and Fall of Nazi Germany). He had a lifelong appreciation for the songs of Rabindranath Tagore and enjoyed cricket and travel.

Public profile

Within political circles and beyond, Bhattacharjee was a polarising figure: praised by some business leaders for administrative focus and praised by others for his commitment to Marxist principles, while critics opposed aspects of his industrial policy and the handling of rural protests. He declined the Padma Bhushan honour after the 2022 announcements, stating publicly that he had not been informed about the award in advance and expressing his refusal to accept it. The CPI(M) reiterated its long-standing practice of declining state awards.

Personal life

Bhattacharjee was married to Meera Bhattacharya, a social activist. The couple had one child, a daughter, Suchetana Bhattacharjee. His father, Nepal Chandru Bhattacharjee, ran the family business Saraswat Library. Bhattacharjee described himself publicly as a communist and an atheist, while noting that he could show deference to others’ religious sentiments. He lived modestly during his tenure as chief minister, declining the official bungalow and operating from a two-room government quarter at 59-A Palam Avenue in Kolkata.

Late life and death

Bhattacharjee experienced ongoing health issues in later years and was hospitalised in December 2021 for respiratory problems. He passed away on 8 August 2024 in Kolkata at the age of 80; the reported cause of death was age-related illness.
