Early life and background

Amarinder Singh was born on 11 March 1942 in Patiala, Punjab, into the family of Yadavindra Singh and Rajmata Mohinder Kaur of Patiala. He grew up in a household with strong public service connections—his father later served as Maharaja of Patiala and his mother was active in national politics. He attended prominent boarding schools and military academies, including Welham Boys' School, The Lawrence School, Sanawar, The Doon School, the National Defence Academy in Pune and the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.

He completed his military education and was commissioned into the Indian Army in the early 1960s. He served as a captain and saw action during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War. After a period away from service in 1965 he rejoined during the conflict and also served as an aide-de-camp to senior army leadership.

Career

Amarinder Singh entered electoral politics in 1980, winning a Lok Sabha seat the same year he joined the Indian National Congress. In 1984 he resigned from Parliament in protest over Operation Blue Star and that year moved into state politics with the Shiromani Akali Dal, winning an assembly seat from Talwandi Sabo and taking on ministerial responsibilities in areas including forests, agriculture, development and panchayats.

In the early 1990s he broke away from the Akali Dal to form the Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic). After an electoral defeat in 1998 he merged his party back into Congress. He served twice as president of the Punjab Congress Committee, holding that post from 1999 to 2002 and again from 2010 to 2013.

Amarinder Singh first became Chief Minister of Punjab in 2002. He returned to that office in March 2017 and served as the state’s 26th chief minister until his resignation in September 2021, a departure he announced publicly after concerns about internal party dynamics. In November 2021 he left the Indian National Congress by submitting a formal resignation.

Following his exit from Congress, he founded the Punjab Lok Congress in November 2021 and later allied that party with the Bharatiya Janata Party for the 2022 Punjab assembly elections. He contested his Patiala Urban seat in 2022 but was defeated by the Aam Aadmi Party candidate Ajit Pal Singh Kohli by a significant margin. In December 2022 he joined the BJP's national executive.
