Early life and background

Gurbachan Singh Salaria was born on 29 November 1935 in Janwal village, Shakargarhi in the part of Punjab that is now in Pakistan. His family moved to India after the Partition and settled in Gurdaspur district, Punjab. He was raised in a household with military ties: his father, Chaudhari Munshi Ram Salaria, served in the British Indian Army with Hodson’s Horse.

Salaria attended King George’s Royal Indian Military College, first at Bangalore and later at Jalandhar. He went on to join the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla in 1953 and completed his military training at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun in 1956.

Career

Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1957, Gurbachan Singh Salaria began his service with the 2/3 Gorkha Rifles. In March 1960 he was transferred to the 3rd Battalion of the 1st Gorkha Rifles, where he served as a platoon commander of Alpha Company. His service number was IC-8497 and his active service spanned from 9 June 1957 until his death on 5 December 1961.

Salaria’s unit was deployed on a United Nations peacekeeping mission during the civil conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. When Ketangese rebel forces moved to seize the strategically important Elizabeth airfield, Salaria and his platoon were assigned to prevent the capture and to dislodge rebel elements that had encircled the site.

Facing a numerically superior force equipped with modern armoured cars, Captain Salaria carried out a bold plan to close with the enemy under cover and disable their vehicles with rockets. The destruction of the armoured cars caused confusion among the rebels. Seizing that moment, Salaria led a close assault with his men, charging with his troops while carrying the traditional Gorkha khukri and rallying with their war cry.

During the attack, Salaria was grievously wounded. He refused evacuation until the battlefield was secured and his men had control of the position. He succumbed to his wounds while being evacuated on 5 December 1961. Reports from the action indicate significant losses among the rebel force during the engagement.

Honours and legacy

For his leadership and conspicuous bravery during the UN peacekeeping operation, Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award. He is noted as the first Indian soldier to receive the Param Vir Chakra for actions while serving under United Nations command, and he is also the first National Defence Academy alumnus to be so honoured.

Several commemorations mark his memory: an intersection at the National Defence Academy has been named Salaria Square, an oil tanker was named after him, the Army Postal Service Corps issued a cover in his honour, and a stadium at the 14 Gorkha Training Centre bears his name.
