Captain Harpreet Chandi Biography
British Army officer, physiotherapist and polar explorer Captain Harpreet Chandi — also known as Polar Preet — became the first woman of Indian origin in 3
Early life and backgroundHarpreet Chandi was born on 7 February 1989 in Derby, United Kingdom, and grew up in that city. She is British by nationality and was raised in a Sikh household. Chandi trained in sport from her teens: at 14 she joined the Sutton Tennis Academy and later continued tennis training at the Novak Tennis Academy in the Czech Republic, where she completed her programme in 2007 and won the Army Tennis Champs Award.
She studied physiotherapy at St George's, University of London, earning a BSc in Physiotherapy (2009–2012). Later she completed a Master’s in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary University of London (2019–2021).
Career
Chandi qualified and worked as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist in the National Health Service in Nottingham beginning in December 2013. After roughly two years in NHS practice she joined the British Army, taking on roles that combined clinical responsibilities with training and operational duties.
Within the Army she served as Officer Commanding Policy and Charging Rules Function in Blandford, overseeing rehabilitation provision for a large number of personnel. She deployed on a United Nations operational tour to South Sudan in July 2018 as a physiotherapist and later worked as a clinical training officer and physiotherapist in Preston, where she organised and delivered training for Combat Medical Technicians.
Her military work included developing and validating training for medical professionals, and she organised endurance events to raise funds for charity. Chandi has taken part in numerous endurance and adventure activities outside her professional duties, including marathons and hikes in Kenya, Morocco, Mexico, the Alps and Nepal.
Polar exploration and the South Pole expedition
Chandi combined her medical and physical training with focused polar preparation. As part of that preparation she practised pulling heavy loads by dragging tyres to simulate the pulk she would tow in Antarctica. Those preparations and training expeditions in Greenland and Norway were part of a multi-year build-up to a solo polar crossing.
In January 2022 she completed a solo, unsupported expedition to the South Pole, finishing a roughly 40-day trek that covered about 700 miles (1,127 kilometres). During the expedition she hauled a pulk with her kit, and faced extreme conditions including temperatures near minus 50 degrees Celsius and high winds. She documented the journey through regular blog updates and live tracking.
The expedition marked a milestone in her career: she became the first woman of Indian origin in the British Army to complete a solo expedition to the South Pole on 3 January 2022.
Public profile
Chandi is publicly known by the nickname Polar Preet and uses the name Preet Chandi on social media. She has shared reflections from her polar training and expedition in blog posts that emphasise preparation, perseverance and encouraging others to push their boundaries. Personal life
Chandi comes from a family that includes at least two brothers, Pardeep Singh Chandi and Jag Chandi. Her parents separated when her mother was in her mid-30s; her mother raised the family. Chandi is engaged to David Jarman, an army reservist. She follows a non-vegetarian diet.
