Early life and backgroundManoj Kumar Pandey was born on 25 June 1975 in Rudha village in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Raised in a family headed by his father, Gopi Chand Pandey, who ran a small business, Manoj grew up with a younger brother, Manmohan Pandey, and his mother Mohini Pandey. He attended schools in Uttar Pradesh, including Uttar Pradesh Sainik School in Lucknow and Rani Laxmi Bai Memorial Senior Secondary School. He later gained entry to the National Defence Academy as part of its 90th course.
Career
After completing his officer training, Manoj Pandey was commissioned into the Indian Army on 6 June 1995 and posted to 1/11 Gorkha Rifles. His early postings included service in the Kashmir Valley and a stint at Siachen, where he remarked on the severe climate as a major challenge for soldiers. He took part in Operation Vijay during the 1999 Kargil War and became widely known for his courage in the Batalik sector.
During the campaign, Pandey led attacks to dislodge intruders from strategic heights. On 11 June 1999 he was involved in operations in the Batalik area, and in late June and early July he led his men in an advance toward a final objective at Khalubar, a ridge at approximately 16,700 feet. Under intense enemy fire, he moved his platoon into advantageous positions and personally led assaults along narrow ridgelines toward enemy bunkers.
Despite sustaining wounds to his shoulder and leg, Pandey continued to press forward. He cleared the first bunker in close combat and inspired his troops with the battle cry "Jai Mahakali, Aayo Gorkhali." He went on to clear additional bunkers, engaging the enemy directly; after neutralizing several positions he attacked a fourth bunker with a grenade but suffered a fatal head wound during the action. His efforts helped his unit capture Jubar Top and drove the attackers back in that sector.
For his conspicuous bravery and leadership, Manoj Pandey was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration for gallantry. He is commonly referred to as the "Hero of Batalik." He was 24 years old when he was killed in action on 3 July 1999 at Khalubar in the Batalik sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
Public profile
Pandey was an avid sportsman with interests in boxing and bodybuilding. He was a standout cadet in the National Cadet Corps during his youth, having been named best cadet of the junior division in Uttar Pradesh in 1990. He enjoyed reading and writing, maintained a personal diary, and played the flute. During a Services Selection Board interview he famously stated his aspiration to win the Param Vir Chakra.
Known for speaking the Gorkhali language because of his unit, his last words to his men were reportedly a command in Nepali meaning "do not spare them." News of his death prompted a large turnout from his home village, where people gathered to pay their respects.
