Early life and background

Vallipuram Vasanthan Christopher was born on 1 January 1966 in Thunnalai, Sri Lanka. He grew up in a family that included his mother, Kamalathevi Vallipuram, and two siblings. His father worked as a bank manager. Miller attended Hartley College in Point Pedro during his youth.

The island nation where he lived was experiencing growing ethnic tensions between the majority Sinhalese and Tamil communities. Events in the 1970s and the large-scale anti-Tamil violence of July 1983 shaped the environment in which he came of age. Those disturbances, and the losses they caused in the Jaffna region, are recorded as a factor in his decision to join militant ranks.

Career

Miller became a member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the Tamil separatist organization active in Sri Lanka. Within the LTTE he became associated with the group’s elite suicide commando unit, later acknowledged as the rst member of what came to be known as the Black Tigers.

On the night of 5 July 1987, during an offensive by Sri Lankan forces around Nelliady as part of Operation Liberation, Miller carried out an attack in which a truck loaded with explosives was driven into a makeshift military camp at Nelliady Central College. The explosion caused extensive damage and resulted in military casualties. Miller died in the blast at age 21.

After his death the LTTE posthumously elevated his rank to captain. His image and story were incorporated into the symbolism and commemorative practices of the Black Tigers; 5 July became a day of remembrance for those cadres, and memorials to him were established in the Jaffna area.

Public profile

Miller’s death left a lasting imprint in the areas affected by the conict. A shrine and statue were installed at Nelliady Madhya Maha Vidyalayam and a memorial site in Nelliady featured a depiction of him in combat attire. Those memorials were repeatedly targeted during changes in control of the region, and accounts note instances in which memorials were removed or damaged and later re-erected.

His mother spoke publicly about the recognition she received because of her son’s notoriety, describing the attention and respect she encountered when travelling.

Physical characteristics

Contemporary records note that Miller had black hair and black eyes. He held Sri Lankan nationality and, at the time of his death, was unmarried.

Legacy

Within LTTE commemorative practice, the week around his death is observed as Black Tiger Week to honor him and other Black Tiger members who died in action. His role in the early development of the Black Tigers has made him a remembered figure in the conict’s history.
