Early life and background

Shiva Chauhan was born and raised in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Her father died when she was eleven, and her mother raised Shiva and her elder sister. Shiva attended school in Udaipur and later graduated in civil engineering from Techno India NJR Institute of Technology, Udaipur.

From an early age she aspired to join the Indian Army, a goal she pursued through national selection channels. In March 2020 she appeared for the Service Selection Board interview in Allahabad and achieved an All India Rank of number one. That recommendation led to her selection for the SSC-Tech 25 (Army) entry.

Career

Chauhan completed her tenure at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, graduating with honours in May 2021 and receiving commission into the Engineer Regiment of the Indian Army as a lieutenant. She serves with the Bengal Sappers (Bengal Engineering Group) and was posted to the Northern Command under the Fire and Fury Corps.

In 2022 she earned promotion to the rank of captain by field ranking. The same year she led a notable cycling expedition, the Sura Soi Cycling Expedition, covering 508 km from the Siachen War Memorial to the Kargil War Memorial on Kargil Vijay Diwas. Her record and performance also qualified her for training at the Siachen Battle School, where she underwent intensive mountain and cold-weather operations training. Her training included ice wall climbing, endurance conditioning, avalanche and crevasse rescue, and survival drills; she was the only woman undergoing training at that centre.

On 2 January 2023 Captain Shiva Chauhan became the first woman officer to be operationally deployed at Kumar Post on the Siachen Glacier, a position located at roughly 15,600 feet in the Karakoram range and often described as the highest battlefield in the world. She led a team of sappers there for a three-month operational posting; the team carried out a range of combat engineering tasks while she commanded the unit.
