Early life and background

Vijayant Thapar was born on 26 December 1976 in Naya Nangal, Punjab, and grew up moving between army stations as the son of a serving officer. His father, Virender Thapar, served as a colonel in the Indian Army, and military life shaped Vijayant’s childhood and ambitions. Educated at several schools affiliated with military and public systems, he completed his class 12 at Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (DAV) College in Chandigarh and later graduated in commerce from Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College.

From an early age he was drawn to sport and fitness. He took part in athletics, swimming and water polo, and trained in bodybuilding before seeking a career in the armed forces. His upbringing in cantonment environments and exposure to parades and troops motivated him to join the Indian Army despite initial family hesitation.

Career

After successfully passing the Combined Defence Services Examination on his first attempt, Vijayant reported to the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun in 1997. At the academy he distinguished himself academically and athletically, earning a silver star for standing second in the merit list for the first term and taking part in parachutist training. He also won awards in swimming at IMA and held the corporal designation when selected for parachute jumps.

On 12 December 1998 he completed training and was commissioned into the Army Service Corps as a lieutenant. He was attached to the 2nd Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles and served in Gwalior before his battalion moved to Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir to carry out counter-insurgency operations. During his time in Kashmir he developed close ties to local communities and supported a young girl, Ruksana, whose family had been affected by violence.

In May 1999, as the Kargil conflict escalated, his battalion was ordered to the Ladakh sector. Thapar took part in Operation Vijay and was involved in the operations to recapture strategic heights around Tololing. On 11 June he led a platoon assault on the Barbaad Bunker section and is recorded as having neutralised enemy fighters and seized arms and ammunition during that action. The recapture of Tololing on 13 June 1999 was a significant early success for Indian forces.

Following Tololing, his unit was tasked with clearing additional enemy-held features. On the night of 28 June 1999 he led an assault on positions at Knoll after his company commander was killed in action. During close-quarters fighting he moved forward to silence machine-gun posts that guarded the objective and was struck by a bullet to the head. He died on 29 June 1999 at Knoll Hill in Dras, Kargil.

He had served in the army from his commissioning in December 1998 until his death in June 1999 and held the rank of Captain at the time of his passing. For his actions in the Kargil conflict he was awarded the Vir Chakra; posthumous honours and remembrances included the dedication of a helicopter base at Drass and a road named in his memory by the Uttar Pradesh government.

Captain Vijayant Thapar’s sacrifice was acknowledged by senior army leadership, and his story became part of public remembrance of the Kargil conflict. A helicopter base at Drass was dedicated in his name and a road in Uttar Pradesh bears his name. His character was portrayed on screen by actor Amar Upadhyay in the 2003 Hindi film LOC: Kargil.
