Caralisa Monteiro Biography
Indian playback singer and prolific jingle artist known for film songs, advertising work and advocacy through music. Born and raised in Mumbai, Caralisa is
Early life and backgroundCaralisa Monteiro was born on 2 September 1978 in Mumbai and grew up surrounded by music. Her father was a bass opera singer and her mother was also a gifted vocalist; music was a constant presence at home, at school and in church. She studied economics and English literature at Sophia College, University of Mumbai. Caralisa learned music informally at home rather than through formal training, and cites a broad range of influences from Whitney Houston to international jazz and pop artists.
Career
Caralisa began her professional career in advertising, building a reputation as a jingle singer from 1999 onward. Early collaborations included work with music directors Loy Mendonsa and Ehsaan Noorani, and a more sustained partnership with Leslie Lewis that produced hundreds of jingles. Over the years she has recorded thousands of jingles, worked as a lyricist and composer for commercials and became widely recognized for that body of work.
Her film playback career includes Hindi and regional projects. She sang in Hindi films beginning in 2002, and contributed Tamil and other language recordings as well. Notable film tracks include the title song of Salaam Namaste (2005), Dard-E-Disco from Om Shanti Om (2007), Phir Dekhiye from Rock On!! (2008) — a song she has described as a breakthrough — English lyrics on Tumse Hi Tumse (Anjaana Anjaani, 2010), All Alone (Rise of the Zombie, 2012), Sha Sha Sha Mi Mi Mi (Shamitabh, 2015), Ranga Re (Fitoor, 2016), Nashe Si Chadh Gayi (Befikre, for which she also wrote the French lyrics), and Besharam Rang (Pathaan, 2022). She has also sung in multiple languages, including English, Tamil, French and Punjabi, and is reported to be able to read, write and speak English, Italian and French.
In 2015 Caralisa released an English-language album titled Illusion; the track Angel in Disguise from that album was used to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. Outside of recording, she performed in stage productions such as the Mumbai run of Let The Music Play in 2010, and participated in talent events and festivals, including reaching the finals of Sutasi, an Asian talent hunt, in 2008.
Public profile
Caralisa is often described for her extensive work in advertising as much as for her film songs. She has spoken candidly about the rigors of studio work — long hours, multiple retakes and late-night sessions — and about principles guiding the projects she accepts. She has said she would avoid work she considers sleazy, though she has made exceptions when an advertisement carries a public-health message she supports.
She and her husband Ryan D’Souza run an NGO called Angel in Disguise that supports cancer patients and vulnerable women and children. Caralisa has completed long-distance events and marathons for charitable causes, including a multi-day run from Mumbai to Pune to raise cancer awareness and has participated in other running events. She has also been involved in charity concerts and festivals that raise funds for underprivileged children.
Personal life
Caralisa married Ryan D’Souza on 11 May 2013. Her parents both died after illnesses: her mother in 1986 and her father in 2006. She had a sister, Giselle, who also passed away in 1996. Caralisa’s listed hometown and birthplace are Mumbai. She is a non-vegetarian and has identified publicly with the Aam Aadmi Party in political discussion.
