Early life and background

Vinay Mohan Sharma, popularly known as Chalaki Chanti, was born on 29 July 1986 in Hyderabad, Telangana. Raised in the city he still calls home, Chanti faced hardship early in life: his mother died when he was nine, and his father left when he was very young. He is one of three brothers; one brother is named Jammalamadaka Ravi Kiran.

Chanti completed his schooling in Hyderabad and went on to attend Pragathi Maha Vidyalaya Degree & PG College. He ultimately earned a B.Com and a Master of Arts. He has described pausing his B.Com studies because of his family’s difficult financial situation, later returning to finish both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

To support himself while pursuing entertainment, Chanti worked a variety of jobs. He was employed as a customer executive at Tata Telecommunications and served as a guest-house manager. He performed mimicry part-time on Hussain Sagar tourist boat rides and later moved into radio, working as an RJ at Radio Mirchi where he hosted a show called “Chanti Bank.” Those early performances and on-air work helped him build a local following and paved the way to television.

Career

Chanti’s first credited film appearance came in the Telugu movie Jallu (2009) in a supporting role. His television breakthrough arrived in 2013 when producer Shyam Prasad Reddy brought him onto the comedy program Jabardasth as the leader of the Chalaki Chanti & Team troupe. The show elevated his profile across Telugu audiences and made him a recognized face in TV comedy.

Over the years he appeared in several other television comedy shows, including Connexion (2015), Pataas (2015), and Sudheer Gaadi Intlo Deyyam (2019). He also extended his work into films, with credits that include Dil Unna Raju (2016), Sita Ramanka Bahaghara Kali Jugare (2017), Love States (2017), and Raahu (2020).

Chanti has spoken publicly about his relationship with Jabardasth. He left the program on three separate occasions for a mix of personal reasons and disagreements about pay equity with other performers. Despite those departures, the show contributed significantly to his rise in popularity.
