Champai Soren was born on 1 November 1956 in Jilinggora village in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district of what is today Jharkhand. He grew up working on the family farm alongside his father and completed formal schooling up to class 10 at Ramakrishna Mission English School, Bistupur, Jamshedpur, passing the B.S.E.B. Patna 10th examinations in 1974.

He belongs to a Scheduled Tribe community and has described roots in a rural household; his father Simal Soren was a farmer and his mother Madho Soren was a homemaker. Champai’s early life and education shaped his long-standing local connections in the Kolhan region of Jharkhand.

Career

Champai Soren entered electoral politics in 1991, winning a by-election for the Seraikella (also spelled Serikela) assembly seat as an independent candidate. He later joined the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and won the seat on a JMM ticket in 1995. Over the next three decades he served multiple terms as the elected representative from Seraikella, including terms in the Jharkhand Assembly through the 2000s and 2010s.

His ministerial roles in the state government have included portfolios such as Science and Technology, Labour and Housing (2010–2013), Food and Civil Supplies and Transport (2013–2014), and from late 2019 to early 2024 he served as the Cabinet Minister for Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes & Backward Class Welfare in the Government of Jharkhand.

In early 2024, following the resignation of the sitting chief minister, Champai Soren was chosen as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha nominee to serve as the state’s 7th Chief Minister (designate). He was sworn in as Chief Minister on 2 February 2024 and subsequently quit the post on 3 July 2024.
