Career

Rai began his professional life in academia, serving as a physics lecturer at RSM Degree College in Dhampur, Bijnor. His involvement with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from a young age shaped his subsequent public career. During the Emergency declared in 1975, he was detained for his links to the RSS and spent roughly 18 months in custody. After his release he left his teaching job and joined the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) as a full-time activist.

Within the VHP Rai rose through organizational ranks over several decades. He held the post of Regional Organization Minister in Ayodhya in 1991 and was elected to the VHP’s national leadership in 1996. He later became Joint General Secretary of the organization in 2002 and has served as an international vice president. From the Ram temple groundbreaking in August 2020 through the consecration events, Rai was a central figure in the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Appointed General Secretary of that Trust in 2024, he worked on various stages of the temple’s construction and provided documentary material and local knowledge during legal and organizational efforts. His deep familiarity with Ayodhya’s geography and history led supporters and observers to describe him as an authoritative source on the site.

Reports list him among those accused in connection with the Babri Masjid demolition of 1992. In addition, in June 2021 a social-media allegation concerning land in his hometown led his family to file a criminal complaint against the individuals who posted the claim.

In June 2026 a separate controversy arose around donations to the Ram temple when cash was recovered from the home of a trust employee who handled contributions. The Uttar Pradesh government constituted a Special Investigation Team to examine the matter, and a member of Rai’s household staff was later named a suspect. Rai resigned as General Secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust later that month.
