Early life and background
Chanchal Chowdhury was born Suchinta Chowdhury Chanchal on 1 June 1971 in Kamarhaat, Pabna district, Bangladesh. Raised in a family from Pabna, he attended Udaypur High School and went on to complete a bachelor’s degree at Rajbari Government College in 1992. He also studied a fine arts course at the University of Dhaka.

Chowdhury comes from a large family; his parents are Radha Gobinda Chowdhury and Sharmila Chowdhury. His father died in 2022. He has two brothers and five sisters. He is married to Santwana Saha; the couple wed in 2006 and have a son, Shoishob Roddur Shuddho. He practices Hinduism.

Career
Chanchal Chowdhury began his performance career in theatre while still in college. During his third year he joined Aronyak, a theatre company founded by Mamunur Rashid, and remained closely associated with the group for nearly a decade. On stage he appeared in productions such as Prakritojoner Kotha (1999), Ora Kodom Ali (2000), Mayur Singhason (2003), Joyjoyonti (2004) and Rarang (2004). His work in plays like Shangkranti (1998) and Che’er Cycle (2003) drew audience appreciation and helped establish his theatrical profile.

Before acting full time Chanchal worked as a lecturer in Fine Arts at the University of Development Alternative (UODA). His on-screen career started with a television commercial: a Grameenphone advertisement that made him widely recognised and led to modelling awards. He debuted on television in the drama Shilalipi (2004) and followed with parts in series including Talpatar Shepai (2006), where he played Bulbul, Vober Hat (2007) as Fiza, and Sakin Sarisuri (2009), which brought him critical praise for his portrayal of the ‘Japan Doctor’. Other television credits include Tiner Tolowar (2005), Potro Mitali (2008), Pattri Chai (2009), Idiots (2012), Shohorali (2019) and Shonda Panda (2023).

Chowdhury’s film debut came with Rupkothar Golpo: A Fairy Tale (2006). He achieved broad recognition for his leading role as Shonai in Monpura, a performance that earned him major awards and later inspired an Indian Bengali remake titled Achin Pakhi (2010). He took a supporting role in the Indo-Bangladeshi musical drama Moner Manush (2010) and played a double role in Aynabaji (2016). In 2018 he appeared as Misir Ali in Debi, an adaptation of Humayun Ahmed’s novel, and he was part of the cast of Hawa (2022) playing Chan Majhi.

In recent years Chowdhury has been active on streaming platforms. He appeared in the web series Neel Dorja (2019) and won praise for his turn in Taqdeer (2020) on Hoichoi. He played Black Ronju in Contract (2021) on ZEE5 and featured as David in Karagar (2022) on Hoichoi. Other digital projects include Unoloukik (2021) on Chorki, Dark Room (2021) on Cinematic, Ladies & Gentlemen (2021) on ZEE5, Pett Kata Shaw (2022) on Chorki and Overtrump (2023) on Chorki. In 2023 he portrayed filmmaker Mrinal Sen in the Indian Bengali film Padatik.
