Chandan Gupta (Kasganj Victim) Biography

Chandan Gupta was a 22-year-old commerce student from Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, who was killed on 26 January 2018 during a violent confrontation that erupted

Early life and background

Chandan Gupta was born in 1995 and grew up in Kasganj, a town in Uttar Pradesh, India. He lived with his parents in a single-storey house on Shivalay Gali. His father, Sushil Gupta, worked as a compounder, and his mother, Sangeeta Gupta, was a homemaker. Chandan was unmarried and followed Hinduism; the family belonged to the Vaishya (Baniya) community.

Education and activities

At the time of his death Chandan was in the final year of a Bachelor of Commerce program at K A (PG) College in Kasganj. From his teenage years he took part in social work and was a co-founder of an NGO called Sankalp Foundation. The organization focused on practical community welfare activities such as blood donation camps and blanket distribution.

Career

Chandan was primarily a student and an active volunteer in local social initiatives. He also worked alongside or volunteered with organizations including the Vishva Hindu Parishad, Hindu Mahasabha, and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Circumstances of death

On 26 January 2018, during a procession described as a Tiranga Yatra, Chandan and other volunteers were involved in a confrontation while attempting to enter a locality reported to be predominantly Muslim. A dispute over attempts to enter that area escalated into violence, and Chandan was shot and killed. He was 22 years old when he died.

Accounts of what led to the confrontation indicate broader tensions tied to a recent Uttar Pradesh government order about removal of loudspeakers from public places without permission. Some participants in the procession viewed the order as being applied unevenly, prompting protests and social-media exchanges that heightened communal rivalry. Organizers of the rally had informed district officials and higher authorities about their plans in the days prior to the event.

Aftermath

Following the incident, law enforcement took action in the investigation. On 31 January 2018 the Uttar Pradesh Police arrested a main accused in connection with the shooting and placed him in custody.

Public profile

Chandan was known locally for his social work and for helping organize community welfare drives through Sankalp Foundation. Beyond that, he was a college student whose activities included volunteering with several Hindu organizations and participating in public demonstrations.
