Early life and backgroundChandan Roy Sanyal was born on 30 January 1980 in Karol Bagh, New Delhi, and grew up in a middle-class Bengali family. He completed his schooling at Raisina Bengali Senior Secondary School in New Delhi and went on to study at Zakir Husain College, earning an honours degree in Mathematics.
His childhood included strong literary and cultural influences from relatives and family members. Financial challenges in the household shaped his early years: his mother worked hard to support the family while his father fell ill. During college, he supported himself by tutoring mathematics and science to school students.

Sanyal made his screen debut in Hindi cinema with Rang De Basanti (2006), portraying Batukeshwar Dutt. After establishing himself on stage, he moved to Bombay to pursue film opportunities and went on to act in a mix of Hindi, Bengali and English-language projects.
His Hindi film credits include Kaminey (2009), for which he auditioned and improvised a piece that later informed the final screenplay; F.A.L.T.U (2011); D-Day (2013); Prague (2013); Jazbaa (2015); and Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017). In Bengali cinema he has appeared in Mahanagar@Kolkata (2010), Aparajita Tumi (2012), Ganesh Talkies (2013), and Rawkto Rawhoshyo (2020). He also featured in the English-language film Midnight’s Children (2012).
On the digital front, Sanyal has acted in the Hindi web series Parchhayee and Bhram, both released in 2019.
