Early life and background

Chandra Shekhar Dutta was born on 31 July 1981 in Ranguni village in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. Raised in a family that includes his father Swapan Kumar Dutta, mother Shefali Dutta, brother Rajeev Dutta and sister Reema Dutta, he spent his hometown years in Dhanbad and developed an interest in acting from an early age, participating in school plays and local theatre while staying with his maternal uncle in Bundu.

He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Hindi from Deoghar Vidyapith in 2004 and pursued formal theatre training with a diploma from the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts (SRC) in New Delhi in 2005. He further honed his craft at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where he received a postgraduate diploma in acting and won best actor honours across his first and second years. Between 2001 and 2003 he trained under Dinesh Khanna, an associate professor at the National School of Drama, and in 2005 he worked as an artist with the Song & Drama Division of the Government of India in New Delhi.

Career

Dutta’s career spans film, television and web series, with work in both mainstream and independent productions. His film credits include portraying Velji in Ram-Leela and roles in Rakta Charitra, Error-404, Kshitij and Kramashah. He also appeared in corporate productions, such as a film made for NABARD. In 2023 he played a preacher in the film The Kerala Story.

On television he has been seen in crime and anthology formats, including episodes of Savdhaan India and Crime Patrol. His web and streaming work includes appearances in Laakhon Mein Ek, Nakaab and Khakee: The Bihar Chapter.

Dutta has also written and directed for the stage. In 2008 he wrote and directed the play A Rehearsal Called Andher Nagari, which received third place in the 9th Ryan International Theatre Festival. In 2009 he participated as an actor in the International Screenwriters Lab conducted by PAL at Matheran.

His training and stage experience include more than 20 plays during his time at SRC, and he has been recognized with a Junior Fellow scholarship under the 2017–18 Scheme for Award of Fellowship to Outstanding Persons in the field of Culture. In April 2020 he became a certified actor under the Skill India scheme.
