Chandrachur Singh was born on 11 October 1968 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a family with ties to public service and the arts, he attended prominent boarding schools in Dehradun before moving to Delhi for higher education. He studied at Welham Boys’ School and The Doon School, and later graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. During his school and college years he participated in extracurricular performances and trained in Indian classical singing; he also worked briefly as a music teacher at Vasant Valley School and as a history teacher at The Doon School early in his life.

Career

Singh entered the film industry in the mid-1990s. His screen debut came in the 1996 film Tere Mere Sapne, but it was his performance as Kripal Pali Singh in Maachis that brought him wide recognition. Over the following years he appeared in a string of Hindi films across genres, including Betaabi (1997), Dil Kya Kare (1999), Daag: The Fire (1999), Josh (2000), Kya Kehna (2000), and Aamdani Atthanni Kharcha Rupaiya (2001).

He has also worked behind the camera, having served as an assistant director on the 1990 film Awaargi, and has contributed his voice to film songs in titles such as Silsila Hai Pyar Ka (1999) and Maruti Mera Dosst (2009). Singh took a break from films after appearing in Bharat Bhagya Vidhata (2002) and returned with Sarhad Paar in 2006.
