Early life and background

Chandrashekhar Azad was born on 3 December 1986 in Dhadkauli village, near Chhutmalpur in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in the Chhutmalpur area and later attended DAV PG College in Dehradun. Trained as a lawyer, he completed a law degree before turning his focus to social activism.

According to family accounts, an early episode of caste discrimination in a nearby school sensitized him to the everyday exclusion faced by Dalit children. That experience, together with developments while caring for an ill parent, contributed to his decision to work on issues facing Dalit communities and become an activist.

Career

In 2015 Chandrashekhar Azad established the Bhim Army Ekta Mission, commonly referred to as the Bhim Army, an organization built around education and mobilization for Dalit rights. The group grew rapidly and became widely visible in Uttar Pradesh and beyond through local campaigns and public rallies.

Azad’s work with the Bhim Army brought him national attention in 2016 and 2017 as the organization took on disputes over social discrimination and public symbols in villages around Saharanpur. The Bhim Army organized large demonstrations, including a 2017 rally in New Delhi that drew thousands of supporters.

He founded the Azad Samaj Party on 15 March 2020 to convert grassroots activism into an electoral political vehicle. In the 2024 general election he won the Nagina Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, marking his entry into Parliament.

Alongside his organizing and political activity, Azad has continued to practice law. His public image is connected to leaders he cites as inspirations: B. R. Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram.

Public profile

Azad was widely known by the nickname Ravan during earlier phases of his activism, though he reportedly stopped using that moniker in 2019. His activism and the confrontational stance of the Bhim Army brought him into frequent interaction with law enforcement. He faced arrests and legal proceedings related to protests and clashes in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, including an extended period in custody followed by release. A court granted him bail in January 2020 with conditions related to protests and movement within Delhi.

He has been profiled in national and international outlets for his role in mobilizing marginalized communities. In 2021 he was named to Time magazine’s annual list of 100 emerging leaders recognized as shaping the future.

Azad has also been the target of violence: in June 2023 he was shot at by unidentified assailants in Saharanpur and subsequently hospitalized for treatment.

Azad is a member of the Chamaar scheduled caste and follows Hinduism. His parents are Govardhan Das, a retired government school principal, and Kamlesh Devi.
