Early life and background

Chandro Tomar was born on 1 January 1932 in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, and was raised in a family with an agricultural background. She lived in the village of Johri in Bagpat district and belonged to a Jat family. Tomar married at a young age and later raised a large joint household that included children and grandchildren.

Tomar had limited formal education but was known to be quick at picking up new skills. She grew up around firearms because one of her brothers served in the military, a familiarity that would later shape an unexpected second act in her life.

Career

Tomar took up shooting in her mid-sixties after accompanying her granddaughter Shefali to the local Johri Rifle Club. When Shefali had difficulty loading a rifle, Tomar stepped in, made a successful shot, and caught the eye of the club coach, Farooq Pathan, who encouraged her to train formally. She began practicing discreetly at odd hours before revealing her interest to family members.

Within weeks of beginning training, Tomar’s image was published in a local newspaper, and her sister-in-law Prakashi Tomar soon followed her into the sport. Chandro competed at the North Zone Championship early in her career, winning a silver medal and defeating an army officer in the process. Over time she competed extensively and accumulated more than 30 national championship titles.

Tomar continued competing into her eighties. In 2016 she won a bronze medal in Delhi, which was her last competition result noted in the record. After stepping back from competition, she devoted time to coaching young shooters, speaking at events, and inaugurating sports institutions. She also worked on establishing shooting ranges across states such as Punjab, Haryana, and Bihar.

Public profile

Chandro Tomar became a widely recognized figure in India, earning nicknames such as Shooter Dadi and Revolver Dadi. Her achievements were acknowledged with several honors, including the Senior Citizen – National Award, HT Woman 2017, the Devi Award, the Shram Shakti Award, and recognition among the 100 Women Achievers.

Her story reached mainstream audiences through television appearances on programs including Satyamev Jayate, India’s Got Talent, and History TV’s OMG! Ye Mera India. In 2019, a feature film inspired by her and Prakashi Tomar’s lives, Saand Ki Aankh, was released, with actresses portraying the two sharpshooters. Tomar and her sister-in-law participated in promotional events for the film, including a visit to The Kapil Sharma Show and a public screening in Baraut, Uttar Pradesh, where they were greeted by large crowds.

Family and influence

Chandro lived in a large joint family reported to include six children and fifteen grandchildren. Three of her daughters became shooters and competed at the international level, and her granddaughter Shefali trained as an international shooter. Her niece Seema achieved distinction as the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Rifle and Pistol World Cup in 2010.

Tomar’s presence in her community was notable; she reportedly influenced local perceptions about safety and opportunity for girls. Her public messaging included support for girls’ education and empowerment, encapsulated by a slogan associated with the family: “Beti Bachao, Beti Khilao, Beti Padhaao.” Known for wearing conventional attire while shooting, she often covered her head with a saree.

Later years and death

In October 2019 Tomar was hospitalized in Delhi for surgery. She continued to make public appearances and remained involved in coaching and advocacy. Chandro Tomar died on 30 April 2021 in a hospital in Meerut after battling COVID-19. She was 89 years old at the time of her death.
