Early life and background

Charanjit Singh Channi was born on 1 March 1963 in the village of Makrona Kalan, Chamkaur Sahib, Punjab. He grew up in a family with roots in the Chamkaur Sahib area; his father worked abroad in Malaysia before returning to India to run a tent-house business, and Channi helped in that work as a child. He completed his school education at Khalsa Senior Secondary School in Kharar and went on to study in Chandigarh and Jalandhar, earning multiple degrees including a postgraduate degree in political science, a BA and LLB, an MBA, and a PhD in political science from Panjab University and Punjab Technical University. During his student years he was active in extracurriculars — representing Panjab University in handball, participating in NCC and NSS activities, and holding student-union posts at both school and college levels.

Career

Channi’s political career began at the local level, where he served as a municipal councillor and later as President of the Municipal Council in Kharar. He became involved with the Punjab Youth Congress and the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee during his college days. In 2002 he was elected opposition leader in the 14th Punjab Vidhan Sabha, and in 2007 he won election to the Punjab Legislative Assembly from the Chamkaur Sahib constituency. He retained that seat in 2012 and 2017.

Initially elected as an independent in 2007 and aligning with the Shiromani Akali Dal for a period, Channi returned to the Indian National Congress in December 2010 with the aid of senior party leaders. He served as Leader of Opposition in the Punjab assembly from December 2015 to November 2016 and was appointed to the state cabinet on 16 March 2017, holding portfolios including Technical Education and Industrial Training, Employment Generation and Training, Tourism, and Cultural Affairs.

On 20 September 2021 Channi became the 16th Chief Minister of Punjab, taking office as the first person from a Scheduled Caste background to hold that post in the state. Two deputies, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and OP Soni, served alongside him in the state cabinet. In the 2022 Punjab assembly elections he contested two seats — Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur — but was defeated in both constituencies by candidates from the Aam Aadmi Party. He later contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Jalandhar and won the seat, defeating a BJP rival.
