Early life and background

Charu Shankar was born on 17 August 1981 in New Delhi, India. She grew up in the city where she completed her schooling at Modern School, Barakhamba Road, and later attended Lady Shri Ram College for Women. She holds a Master of Arts in English (Hons.). From an early age she was drawn to dance and drama, performing in school plays and joining her college dramatics club, where she took part in several theatrical productions.

Career

Charu’s professional life spans performance, fitness and theatre. She began working in the public arena in 2001 as a host on the NDTV-backed show Fatafit for Dr Morepen’s Tango. Around the same time she also began teaching dance, joining Danceworx as an instructor.

In fitness and wellness, Charu developed a significant profile. She hosted multiple fitness and health programs on NDTV, including Workout Victim (2006) and The Perfect Body Built By Tech (2014). In 2008 Reebok named her a global instructor from India, and she has trained clients in programs such as Jukari at Fitness First. She is AFPA-certified as a pre- and post-natal fitness specialist and is also a certified ACE trainer. Charu founded Janani Wellness Studio, a centre focused on childcare services and support for new mothers, and in 2017 she joined Rosewalk Healthcare in New Delhi as head of the well-being department, where she launched prenatal and postnatal classes and related programs.
