Cheran Pandiyan was born on 12 December 1965 in Pazhayoorpatti, Melur, Madurai, in Tamil Nadu. Raised in a household connected to local cinema and education, his father worked as a projector operator for a travelling theatre and his mother was a primary school teacher. He grew up in Pazhayoorpatti and identifies with Hinduism; his caste is listed as Scheduled Caste.

As a young student Cheran participated in school dramas, an early exposure to performance that helped shape his later career. To prepare for acting roles he would rehearse famous film dialogues in front of a mirror. Outside work, he has enjoyed writing and listening to music.

Cheran began his film career behind the camera, assisting established director K. S. Ravikumar and serving as an assistant or associate director on several productions. His 2000 film Vetri Kodi Kattu won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues. In 2004 he wrote, directed, produced and starred as Senthil Kumar in Autograph, a project that became a major success and brought him wider recognition; the film also screened internationally, including multiple showings at the Montreal World Film Festival. Autograph received National Film Award recognition as Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and earned several regional awards for its direction and production.

Cheran followed with Thavamai Thavamirundhu, which won a National Film Award in 2005 for Best Film on Family Welfare and garnered him awards for writing and direction. Additional recognition came for Aadum Koothu, which received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil in 2007. He has continued producing and supporting smaller films, with production credits that include Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu (2006), Aadum Koothu (2007), Muran (2011), and JK Enum Nanbanin Vaazhkai (2015).

His acting work has been acknowledged as well; in 2011 he received a Jaya TV Award for Best Actor for Yuddham Sei. Throughout his career Cheran has collected multiple honours between 1997 and 2015 for his writing, directing, producing and acting.
