Chetan Salunkhe Biography

Chetan Salunkhe is an Indian dancer from Pune who rose from humble beginnings to win the dance reality show Dance Plus 4 in 2019. Self-taught and inspired

Early life and background

Chetan Salunkhe was born in 1999 and grew up in Pune, Maharashtra. Raised in a poor Marathi household in a slum area of the city, he left formal education after completing the 10th standard to help his family. His upbringing included strong family influences: his mother worked as a household help and his father was unable to work because of a leg problem. Salunkhe also has two sisters and at least one brother.

From an early age he was passionate about dance. He spent much of his childhood emulating performers he admired — from Michael Jackson to Prabhu Deva — and often practised in public spaces. He taught himself by watching videos and repeatedly practising the moves that caught his interest, gradually developing a distinctive popping and animation style that made him well known in his locality.

Career

Chetan’s on-screen career began in 2018 when he made his television debut on the regional dance show Dance Maharashtra Dance on ZEE Yuva. He continued to pursue wider opportunities and auditioned multiple times for the national dance competition Dance Plus. After trying three times, he was selected for the show’s fourth season.

On Dance Plus 4 he became a standout performer, ultimately winning the competition in February 2019. In the grand finale he performed with international artist Marquese Scott and took home the trophy as well as a cash prize of ₹25 lakh, which he planned to use toward buying an apartment for his family. His win brought him national recognition and highlighted the role his supporters played in the campaign, including family members and friends who voted for him; his grandmother was notably active in campaigning on his behalf.

Along the way Chetan has shared stages with prominent figures in Indian entertainment. He has danced with established performers such as Prabhu Deva and Govinda; Govinda presented him with shoes and clothes. He has also met Marathi singer and actor Ketaki Mategaonkar, a performer he admires.

Public profile

Chetan is known by nicknames such as Chain and Popping Badshah, reflecting his specialization in popping and animation dance styles. Physically, he is listed at approximately 168 cm (1.68 m) tall and around 55 kg (121 lbs). He has black eyes and black hair, and bears tattoos that include the word "Mom" on his right hand and a crown with the word "Badshah" on his chest.

Personal interests and beliefs

Beyond dance, Chetan enjoys listening to music, travelling, and playing the guitar. His favourite actor is Shah Rukh Khan and his favourite actress is Ketaki Mategaonkar.
