Early life and backgroundCheteshwar Arvind Pujara was born on 25 January 1988 in Rajkot, Gujarat. Raised in a cricketing household, his father Arvind Pujara and uncle Bipin both played Ranji cricket for Saurashtra. Pujara lost his mother, Reena, to cancer when he was a teenager. He attended Lal Bahadur Shastri Vidyalaya and RM Chhaya High School in Rajkot and later completed a Bachelor of Business Administration through correspondence.
From an early age he showed a natural aptitude for batting. As a youngster he travelled to Mumbai during school vacations to train against higher-quality pace bowling and gain match practice. He made notable contributions in age-group cricket, including a triple century in a U-14 Ranji match and a double century in under-19 internationals that helped India to a big win.
Career
Pujara established himself as a batsman suited to the longer format. He made his Test debut for India on 9 October 2010 against Australia in Bangalore, and his ODI debut on 1 August 2013 versus Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. He is a right-handed batter who bowls occasional right-arm legbreak and has been associated with several domestic and county sides over his career, including Saurashtra, West Zone, Mumbai A, Board Presidents XI, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kings XI Punjab, Derbyshire and Yorkshire. He has also played for Sussex in the County Championship.
Over the years Pujara built a reputation for occupying the crease and compiling large innings. His first-class record includes multiple triple-centuries and a prolific run in 2013 when he scored over 2,000 first-class runs at an average above 100. In Test cricket he has recorded multiple centuries, including double hundreds, and played marathon innings that required exceptionally high numbers of deliveries faced; during Australia’s 2017 tour of India he spent more than ten hours at the crease to notch a double century.
His county career has featured high points as well. He represented Derbyshire during the 2014-15 County season, making a sequence of useful scores after a difficult debut, and in April 2022 he scored an unbeaten double century in the County Championship, becoming the second Indian to hit a double ton in that competition. In April 2023 he marked his full-time Sussex captaincy debut in the County Championship with a century against Durham.
Pujara’s style and contributions have been recognized with awards and records. He won the Emerging Cricketer of the Year award in 2013 for his performances in the longer format. Among his statistical highlights are rapid accumulations of Test runs early in his career, multiple triple-centuries in first-class cricket, and a consistently high List-A average.
Public profile
On the field Pujara is often described as calm and methodical, with a favourite scoring shot reported as the behind-cut. Team-mates and opponents have remarked on his honesty and straightforward nature; his conduct and temperament have become part of his public profile as much as his run-making.
Personal life
Pujara is married to Puja Pabari; the couple wed on 13 February 2013. He is known to lead a disciplined lifestyle, is reported to be teetotal, and maintains private pastimes such as listening to old music and watching movies. His preferred cricketers include Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Ricky Ponting, and among film and music preferences he has named Amitabh Bachchan and Lata Mangeshkar.
Latest updates
Recent milestones in his county career include a double century for Derbyshire in April 2022 and a hundred on his debut as full-time county captain for Sussex in April 2023. Throughout his career he has remained a mainstay of long-format cricket, with continued contributions at domestic and county level.
