Early life and background

Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty was born on 4 July 1997 in Mumbai and grew up in a family that supported his sporting ambitions. He began playing badminton around age seven at Goregaon Sports Club while schooling at Ryan International School in Mumbai. After the 10th standard he chose to focus on a sporting path while continuing academic study in commerce at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics.

Chirag comes from a Mangalorean background. His father, Chandrashekhar Shetty, is a hotelier and his mother, Sujata Shetty, runs an academy at Goregaon Sports Club. He has a younger sister, Arya Shetty, who is also a professional badminton player.

Career

Shetty made his early international appearances in junior events, including a run at the Sushant Chipalkatti Memorial India Junior International in 2013 and success at the Swiss Junior Open and Yonex Belgian Junior in 2014, where he won junior doubles titles. His first international senior entry on record was the Swiss Junior Open 2014 men’s doubles, and he began to accumulate titles on the BWF International Challenge/Series circuit in 2016.

A key step in his development came when he moved to Hyderabad to train at the Pullela Gopichand Academy under chief national coach Pullela Gopichand. There he was paired with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy for men’s doubles. The partnership required adjustments in playing style and temperament: both were initially back-court oriented and had different off-court habits, but coaching guidance and time helped them develop complementary roles and a stronger bond.

As a pairing, Chirag and Satwik began to deliver notable results. They won multiple international challenge-level events in 2016 and captured gold in the mixed team at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, as well as silver in the men’s doubles at the same Games. On the BWF World Tour they collected a number of trophies, including the Hyderabad Open (Super 100) in 2018, Thailand Open (Super 500) in 2019, and the French Open (Super 750) title in 2019. They also reached runner-up at the 2019 French Open (Super 750) and achieved success at the Swiss Open in 2023. On 10 March 2024, the duo again won the French Open men’s doubles title.

Shetty has won a sequence of national and international honours with the Indian team, including bronze medals in team events at the Asia Team Championships and a men’s doubles gold at the 2023 Asian Games. Individually and as part of the doubles pair, he reached a career-high world ranking of world No. 7 in men’s doubles on 12 November 2019.

He has represented India at the Olympic Games, competing with Satwiksairaj at Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021), where the pair did not progress to the knockout stage despite a competitive showing in a strong group.

A right-handed player standing approximately 1.86 m (6'1") and weighing around 60 kg, Shetty developed under coaches including Uday Pawar and Mathias Boe, in addition to training at Gopichand’s academy. Chirag Shetty received the Arjuna Award in 2020 in recognition of his contributions to Indian badminton. State-level recognition followed, including felicitation by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra after the Arjuna Award announcement.
