Early life and backgroundChiranjeevi Sarja was born on 17 October 1980 in Bangalore. Raised in a family with strong film connections, he was the grandson of Kannada actor Shakti Prasad and the nephew of actor Arjun Sarja. He attended Baldwin Boys High School in Bangalore and went on to complete his graduation at Vijaya College.
Career
Sarja began his film career working behind the camera, spending several years as an assistant director with his uncle Arjun Sarja. He transitioned to acting with his on-screen debut in the Kannada film Vayuputra (2009), in which he played the role of Balu. His early work earned him recognition as a promising newcomer; he received the Innovative Film Award for Best Debut (Male) for Vayuputra.
Over the next decade he appeared in a series of Kannada films, including Gandedhe (2010), Kempegowda (2011), Ajith (2014), Amma I Love You (2018), and Sinnga (2019). His final film release was Shivarjuna (2020). Sarja was sometimes known by the nickname "Chiru."

Chiranjeevi Sarja married actress Meghana Raj. The couple became engaged on 22 October 2017 and held two ceremonies for their marriage: a Christian wedding on 30 April 2018 at St. Anthony’s Church in Koramangala, Bangalore, followed by a Hindu wedding on 2 May 2018 at Bengaluru Palace Ground. At the time of his passing, his wife was pregnant.
Death and reactions
On 7 June 2020 Sarja suffered a sudden medical emergency while speaking to his father by phone and collapsed. He was taken to Apollo Hospital in Jayanagar, Bangalore, where he was pronounced dead that day. He was 39 years old. His last rites were carried out on 8 June 2020 at his grandfather Shakti Prasad’s farmhouse in Jakkenahalli, Madhugiri taluk, Tumakuru district.
Following his death, leaders and figures in Karnataka's public life expressed sorrow. The chief minister of Karnataka at the time, B. S. Yediyurappa, remarked that the Kannada film industry had lost a good actor. Former chief minister H. D. Kumaraswamy described Sarja as a shining star and expressed disappointment at his untimely passing.
Latest updates
Sarja’s final screen appearance was in the 2020 film Shivarjuna. At the time of his death he was married to Meghana Raj and their family announced that his wife was expecting a child.
