Early life and background

Chitra Ramkrishna was born in 1963 in Bombay (now Mumbai) and is originally from Chennai. She comes from a family of accountants; her father was a chartered accountant and her grandfather was a cost accountant. Ramkrishna pursued commerce and completed degrees that include a B.Com., chartered accountancy qualifications and a Bachelor of Laws. Her professional education also lists associations with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

Career

Ramkrishna began her career in the mid-1980s, joining the Project Finance Division of the Industrial Development Bank of India in 1985. She worked at the Securities and Exchange Board of India and later returned to IDBI’s treasury desk in 1990. She was part of the team that helped draft the legislative framework for SEBI in 1987.

She joined the National Stock Exchange (NSE) at its inception in 1992 and played a hands-on role in building the exchange’s technology and nationwide reach. Her early initiatives at NSE included work on a pan-India VSAT network, infrastructure to support a depositor system, widening retail trading access across India and establishing systems that prioritized cost leadership and scalability. She led the launch of internet-based trading at NSE in February 2000 and contributed to the exchange’s expansion into products such as futures and options, currency trading, exchange-traded funds, global index offerings and a dedicated platform for debt trading.

Over two decades at the exchange, Ramkrishna rose through leadership roles including Head of Listing, Deputy Managing Director, Joint Managing Director and director-level responsibilities. On 1 April 2013 she became Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NSE, making her the first woman to hold that office at the exchange and one of the earliest women to head an exchange in the Asia-Pacific region.

During her tenure as MD and CEO, NSE expanded its footprint to more than 1,500 locations across India, attracted institutional investors and partners, and recorded strong financial performance in earlier years. She played a role in bringing strategic investors to the exchange and oversaw efforts that positioned NSE among global leaders in certain trading metrics. In 2016 she was named chairperson of the World Federation of Exchanges at the organisation’s annual meeting in Cartagena.
