Chitrangada Singh Chahal was born on 30 August 1976 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, into a family with an army background. She spent her school years at Sophia Girls School in Meerut and went on to graduate in Home Science from Lady Irwin College in New Delhi. During her youth she considered a career as an air hostess and attempted enrollment several times before moving into modelling.

She was named after a character from the Mahabharata and trained in kathak dance. Her family includes a brother, Digvijay Singh, who is a golfer, and a sister, Tina Singh. Her father, Niranjan Singh, served in the army.

Career

Chitrangada began her professional life as a model and appeared in music videos that brought her to wider attention. Director Sudhir Mishra spotted her in a music video and cast her in the ensemble drama Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi, which marked her film debut in 2005. Her early work in that period also included the film Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow (2005).

After a brief hiatus, she returned to features with Sorry Bhai in 2008 and went on to appear in a variety of mainstream Bollywood productions. Her film credits include Desi Boyz, Anjaan, Gabbar Is Back, Munna Michael and Baazaar. In 2018 she expanded into film production with Soorma.
